Centurion Award – Ken

Our next Centurion recipient is Ken Shields, for his service as an officer of Tuckahoe Lodge from 1996 to 2000.

Ken Shields led Tuckahoe Lodge as its Lodge Chief for three and a half consecutive years during the turn of the 21st century. He and Brian Kline, Lodge Adviser, attended the 1999 National Leadership Summit at Colorado State University to prepare for the Order’s policies and programs moving into the year 2000 and beyond.

Ken comes from a strong Scouting and Order of the Arrow family and it seems inevitable that he would take on leadership roles within the Lodge. Ken was one of the few kids that come along that could relate and communicate very well with both the youth he was leading as well as the adults of the Lodge membership. He was respected by both and had strong leadership skills to take on any issue within the Lodge.

Ken spent his summers as a camp staff member, not just performing his paid duties as a staff member, but countless hours handling all the Order of the Arrow aspects that happen within a Council’s summer camp program such as elections, call out ceremonies and fellowships. If anyone represented the ideals of the Order of the Arrow by a demonstration of service, it was Ken.

In general, Ken was a Lodge Chief that needed very little advising. He knew the mission of the Lodge and the players needed to make things happen.
